Earthquake Resistant TMT Bars - Unbreakable in Any Natural Disaster

India and many of its neighboring countries have become subject to severe seismic actions during the last ten years. Who can forget the terrible earthquake in Kathmandu and adjacent areas in April 2015? The calamity had devastated not less than six lakhs structures to ashes. The death toll also neared 10000.

Curiously, the incident also revealed another fact. While the houses and other structures in Nepal were almost ruined, the extent of losses in the Indian States bordering Nepal was much less. Experts pointed out the fact that the use of TMT bars in the structures in the Indian States had saved the constructions and human lives too. From the instance, one can understand the role that Earthquake Resistant TMT Bars play in stabilizing constructions.

Considerations For Builders While Designing a Modern Construction

While developing new construction, builders must look for tensile strength, i.e. the building must have enough intrinsic stoutness and reflexive property. While the former provides the construction with the required sustainability, the latter helps resist natural catastrophes like earthquakes, heavy rain, and thunderstorm.

Besides these, the reflexive property in the Thermo Mechanically Treated Bars helps them successfully prohibit corrosion. Corrosion Resistance TMT Bars never get rust. It also saves the construction from getting a crack and sustains longer.

India had witnessed a number of seismic incidences in the last few years. Builders thus concentrate on factors that will protect the construction in disasters:

● In the first place, he will introduce earthquake-resistant designs and detailing. This helps the construction stay protected against damages due to minor and frequent earthquakes.

● The second level is the protection design against moderate earthquakes. The architect will design the building sketch to ensure that middle-range earthquakes cannot cause major harm to the construction. However, such designs cannot resist trivial collateral damages.

● The third and final level of protection designs is for Grade IV and V seismic zones. The seismic and corrosion prohibition strategies guarantee that even frequent and severe earthquakes cannot cause harm to the construction.

Roles Of Thermo Mechanically Treated Bars in Prohibiting Earthquake Action

TMT bars maintain the gold standard as concrete reinforcement units. This is a combination of unique tensile strength and ductility. The stoutness and flexibility that these rebars show has made them extremely popular in the eyes of builders throughout the country.

Leading TMT bar manufacturers including Maan TMT use the TEMPcore process in processing these Thermo Mechanically Treated rebars. The procedure involves rapid quenching of extremely hot bars with Jet water force for smaller periods of time.

Rapid cooling converts the outer layer into a hard martensite structure. It possesses a high level of tensile strength, On the contrary, the inner core remains soft yet hot when the water jet stops ejecting. Cooling down of the inner core at room temperature gives out a soft ferrite pearlite structure. It gives the rebar ductility.

The thickness of the outer and inner core in TMT rebars is the measurement of their grades. Grades determine the strength of TMT bars, while ductility is a measurement of their flexibility. With these, the bars gain structural integrity that enables these to absorb shocks during seismic occurrences.

Builders in Assam and the other North-Eastern States in India use Fe 550D grade TMT bars. According to experts there, these are the best earthquake-resistant TMT Bars. The residential buildings and other constructions there will also need flexibility in design to combat high rains that often accompany high thunderstorms.

In seismic zones 3 & 4, however, experts recommend the use of Fe 415 or other high strength grades with ‘S’. Critical observations have proved that Fe 415 TMT bars have a more righteous proportion of tensile strength and ductility than the authored S varieties like 500S. Therefore, these are better suited for seismic zones.

Final Words

Seismology experts say India’s plate is spinning anticlockwise and moving at 45 mm per year. The National Center of Seismology has identified India as a high earthquake-prone zone. More than 55 percent of the country is under high-risk seismic potential. The use of appropriate Earthquake Resistant TMT Bars is thus crucial for new constructions in the country.
